The Trenches in Life
"Watch out! There is a trench lying ahead" - this fair warning to any person going about his comes as a godsend advise. But life as we know it presents us with many such metaphorical trenches as we go about living it. To a certain point in life as we age, we are surrounded by certain guardian angels in the form of parents, teachers, friends and the like who keep us informed and insulated from falling down and even if we do, they make sure that the damage is minimal. Once you start making your life decisions that is when the level of awareness and the responsibility of being alert increases. As you start out in the early ages of adulthood full of vigor and the heart to conquer anything, the World as you know if opens its doors and nothing is impossible.
Now everyone has their own dreams and aspirations in life, most of the time which we are able to achieve in one way or the other. The initial pitfalls or trenches we are faced with as we start out are seen as insignificant and the urge to move forward far outweighs the thought of being stuck in a place for sometime. Some people are fortunate enough to have that drive going in their life constantly which enables them to stop at nothing but what they wanted to make out of themselves. But for most of the other side of the population, once the mind feels that you have achieved something with which you can enjoy the comforts of the daily life with less hassle and the way you live is something far better than what you have imagined through your early adulthood; the feeling of 'settled' starts to sink down and you feel so very thankful to life. Most dreams and aspirations that were held high during early school years start to take a back seat and you move forward with whatever you have accomplished so far.
This is the point where we feel kind of insulated from all the negatives in life and happiness seems never ending. But seldom do we remember that this is the very pattern of life that we had walked earlier which had its own trenches ahead of us. When you feel smoothly cruising along the calm waters again as a nature the tides get rough, it throws you around and the landing may not be always particularly smooth. This is essentially the point when you start to loose all hope and faith in your decisions, thoughts, words and in yourself. Having sailed on a calm comforting space and suddenly finding yourself in the midst of a wreck can have a catastrophic effect on your attitude and outlook towards life as a whole.
Image yourself walking briskly on a warm sunny day surrounded by everything you ever loved. You feel strong, relaxed and looking ahead the distance does not seem to matter because the walk itself makes you so zealous. Suddenly in the middle of nowhere you fall down this deep dark Trench and by the time you realize it is dark all around. Obviously the very first thoughts that come to your mind are "Why me? What did I do wrong?" and you start to get frantic. It is nothing but natural for your mind to pull up all the negative thoughts before your eyes and even the thought of "Will I be here from now on?" comes up. The world above you is still the same, everything you loved is still there, the folks whom you spoke to happily a few days back are still enjoying their walk - nothing changes in the setting above you. Now it takes a while for the mind to finally come to the realization that with some effort the path to the world above is not wholly impossible and you start to come up with plans/methods to get yourself out. Most of the times when you are so deep down, many that you know though sympathetic of your situation and even stop by at the edge of the trench to have a word with you that everything is alright in the world; not everyone has a person who is daring enough to help you out of there.
As you ponder upon your thoughts and the kind words from the happy people walking around the perfect world above you, it sometimes makes you weak and seem targeted upon. But the truth is, the very 'you' that is now at the bottom of this trench was once a person that used to tackle even deeper downs with agility and enthusiasm. The youth in you was unstoppable and had the power to outrun almost everything that came across your way. The only reason why you feel weak is because the world above as opposed to the blank or struggling world you had seen in your early days is now filled with all the joys of life and you fear of losing them. I am sure that almost everyone has been a champion in fighting their monsters under the bed and tackling the most feared demons with ease. Only because those did not come in your way for a long time and that you created a small safe ecosystem for yourself do you feel that you are now far less powerful than before. The truth is that everyone of us is a fighter within that has fought the battles of emotions, fears, distrust, mistakes, insecurity, low self-esteem and much more at least once before; be it with or without your knowledge.
Gather your strength from nothing but yourself first, things that had inspired you in the past, people who have achieved greater things, just anything and everything in life that is a result of a struggle like Nature itself! Bring yourself together and make the way up the Trench one step at a time; there might be missed grips and falls along the way but that does not mean that you will never reach the top. Remember, there will be trenches along the way; but there is always a way up!!
